Course Structure

There are many variations of EMDR Basic Training around the world. However, not all are recognized by the Trauma Therapy Association (TTA).

Eligibility

  • Completion of the 2-day Introduction to Psychotraumatology Workshop conducted by TTA
  • AND one of the following:
    • Licensed and practicing mental health professionals (psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, medical doctors), OR
    • Graduate students in a master’s or doctoral program (mental health licensure track), actively interning with access to clients

  • Completion of Introduction to Psychotraumatology required
  • Must finish course requirements within 1 year (else repeat the workshop)

  • Completion of Part 1
  • 5 hours of consultation with an EMDR Asia recognised consultant within 2 years

Applicants in Asian countries with EMDR Associations must obtain written permission from their local Association before applying

Introduction to Psychotraumatology
(Part 0)

A 2-day workshop to gain a deep understanding of small ‘t’ traumas to facilitate meaningful transformation.

EMDR Basic Training
(Level 1)

Four days of training which includes lectures, video demonstrations and supervised practice in small groups.
And Five hours of case consultation with an approved EMDR consultant over the following months for Part 1.

EMDR Basic Training
(Level 2)

Upon completion of Part 1 requirements:
Four days of training which includes lectures, video demonstrations and supervised practice in small groups.
And Five hours of case consultation with an approved EMDR consultant over the following months.

About EMDR Training Structure

EMDR Therapy Basic Training has two levels:

  • Four days of training which includes lectures, video demonstrations and supervised practice in small groups, with five sessions of case consultation with an approved EMDR consultant over the following months for Level 1.

  • Followed by a similar structure for Level 2, upon completion of Part 1 requirements, i.e., 4 days of training which includes lectures, video demonstrations and supervised practice in small groups. And five sessions of case consultation with an approved EMDR consultant over the following months.

  • Please take note: Case Consultations for both levels are priced separately from trainings.

  • Certificate of Completion for this basic training is given by completing all the above requirements. Those participants unable to complete the course requirements within 3 years after the training will not receive the Certificate of Completion and will have to repeat the entire Basic EMDR Training.

Details

EMDR Basic/Standard Training has 2 parts of training (minimum 20 hours lectures, 20 hours practice and 10 hours supervision/consultation) which includes lectures, video demonstrations and supervised practice in small groups. Five hours of case consultation with an approved EMDR consultant after each part of the Basic Training is a requirement for receiving the certificate of completion. Consultation involves presenting two transcribed cases, question-and-answer, and receiving feedback on cases seen by the participants where EMDR was used as the treatment approach.

After Basic Training, participants are encouraged to continue to develop their competency in EMDR Therapy through ongoing case consultations with an Approved Consultant as well as participation in EMDR-related advanced/specialty training/conferences. These would contribute to meeting the requirements to become an EMDR Asia Approved Certified EMDR Practitioner.

The TTA reserves the right to decide which Approved Trainers and Approved Consultants/Facilitators to engage locally so as to ensure the highest standard of the clinical use of EMDR

Certificate of Completion

Attending the complete course (Introduction to Psychotraumatology, EMDR Basic Training Part 1 and Part 2) with theory, practicum and supervised consultation are the mandatory requirements for receiving Certificate of Completion.

Certificate of completion is issued by TTA in collaboration with EMDR Asia, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs (HAP), and EMDR Institute.
